Hanging Out in the Neighborhood

We've been driving our son's car since he has our SUV, so we stayed close to home this weekend.  The sad thing is that we are getting so old that we are sore from riding in a car.  We usually ride around sitting upright, with plenty of room...and in Mike's low profile car, it's like sitting on the ground.  After hour one I was in pain and so was my hubby.  Spoiled rotten we are.  Anyway, we went right down the road to South Barrington to the Junk Warehouse, and right across the parking lot is Tattered Tiques.

I had been to the Junk Warehouse once before a couple of years ago.  Their inventory has changed from what I remember.  There is much more painted furniture, cool accessories set up in vignettes, alot of nice junk.  I really liked that  blue door in the back, made up like a hall tree with hooks and a mirror. No room for that in my tiny foyer.  But I did find a great piece, something that I've wanted for a long time...

More cool stuff, but this is what my honey bought me...

I don't know what they call it, but I call it a dictionary table.  Every self respecting grade school classroom had one when I was in school.   You could walk up to the dictionary anytime you might need to use it, and I used it plenty when I was young, and still do today.  I have some really great dictionaries I could display on my new table, but I decided a couple of spring books might look nice.  The table fits perfectly in my foyer, and has a really nice gray finish that I like.

It's nicely distressed too.  I haven't seen a table like this since grade school.

At Tattered Tiques, there was eye candy galore.  I had already spent more than I wanted, so I mostly gawked.  I did buy these tablespoons.

Mr. Rogers suggested that we punch a pillow when we are feeling angry.  Me, well I will pound some spoons and flatten them for garden markers...

They had subway signs of local Chicago stops that I really liked.  They also carry the ASCP...the chalk paint that everyone seems to be using.  I cannot pay what they want for a small can of it.  I can be cheap about some things, though no paint is inexpensive.  Ace brand paint works great for me.

My greatest find all weekend,  was at a Estate Sale on the way home.  !/2 price Sunday!
This small tablecloth, complete with darned holes.  I just saw Bronson Pinchot using a piece of vintage fabric that had been lovingly repaired.  (Check out the Bronson Pinchot Project on DIY...I got the tip from Dawn, and I am hooked.  For those with cable, all the episodes are available On Demand...set aside a couple of hours, it's that good!)
Does anyone still darn?  For the record we spent most of the weekend doing Grandparent stuff...sigh...  Washing little clothes and blankets, doing some shopping for a car seat and other accessories that every baby needs. Maybe we hurt because our shopping involved 4 furniture stores, 2 Targets and an Ikea visit. Plus, what about this weather, yuck, if you ask me.  I'll take my 80 degree days in July not March, thank you!
Maybe I should go pound some spoons, I sound a little cranky!  Have a great day my friends.

Those stores look like alot of fun. I love so much of that stuff but have no place to put it. I could tell from the last place that they used the chalk paint. I love the look of it but I can't afford that either. You can make you own. A store I like to go to and I have purchased several little tables (my coffee table) paints everything white. I asked her what she used and she said Walmart cheap flat wall paint. She says the same thing about what they say about the chalk paint. NO prepping, no running, no sanding. As soon as this rain stops I want to try it. She distresses it but I don't think she waxes it. I will check on it. There are alot of steps to the chalk paint. I do love their colors.
The warm temps worry me about summer being really hot. We have had some really bad storms. Last night my hubby was in the ER with a virus. We had a tornado warning and they put all the people with windows in their rooms in the hall.
Have a good week.

Those look like some terrific places to shop! I love your dictionary table. What a novel addition to your home. Your tablecloth is sweet. I hope you show us your spoon/plant markers when you are done making them!

Rest up! You've earned it!

I like the dictionary table . . . I remember them from school too. I wonder if that is why I like spelling words . . . looking them up, checking, making sure . . .

Shops look fun . . . although I like to find a bargin, refinish it myself . . . rather than find a finished piece.

I shouldn't have laughed about you and hubby in your sons car which felt like sitting on the ground. Amazing isn't it how we get so comfortable in "our things" and we don't even have a clue about it all until we are confronted with the "not having!" Very nice of you, mom and dad, to let him take your wheels!

I miss spring too . . . not ready for summer!

Thanks for sharing your experiences, we don't live too far apart so perhaps I'll make my way there one of these days....much to my husband's chagrin! Love your dictionary table! And your husband is a real keeper, but then you already know that!
